Career
summary
Michael Taylor’s 20 years investigating and analysing Asian economies
was presaged in 1988, when he moved to Hong Kong to work as for the Far Eastern
Economic Review – during which he travelled extensively in Asia.
In 1992 Michael was invited by Morgan Stanley to be their Asian Regional
Economist, based in Hong Kong. There he had responsibility for economic
coverage throughout Asia, including all countries in a triangle running from
China to India to New Zealand, but excluding Japan.
In late 1996 Michael was invited to become Chief Economist of Indosuez
WI Carr – at the time one of the two or three leading regional stockbrokers in
Asia, and which supported an unparalleled number of offices throughout the
region, including, for example, offices in Japan and Pakistan. Here he
continued his coverage but also helped manage teams of economists throughout
Asia.
In 1999, in addition to his other responsibilities, Michael relocated to Tokyo in order to help
re-open Indosuez WI Carr’s research brokerage operations in Japan.
In 2002, he joined Deutsche Bank as their Asian Equity Economist in Hong
Kong.
In 2003, he returned to the UK to serve as a director in Blue Oak
Capital, a London-based investment bank, which included research services and
also a small fund-of-funds operation.
